Where is Balsam Cove Campground located?

Balsam Cove Campground is located in Orland, Maine on Toddy Pond, about 8 miles from Bucksport and 22 miles from the Acadia National Park Gateway Center. We’re in Down East Maine, offering lakeside camping with easy access to hiking, lobster tours, and coastal attractions.

When is Balsam Cove Campground open?

Our camping season runs from May 15 through September 28. Holiday weekends and summer dates fill quickly, so early reservations are recommended.

Is Balsam Cove Campground near Acadia National Park?

Yes. We are approximately 22 miles from the Acadia Gateway Center, where you can park and access the Island Explorer bus system into the park. Many guests choose us as a quieter and more affordable base for exploring Acadia.

Absolutely. We’re a lakeside, family-oriented campground on Toddy Pond featuring holiday theme weekends, Kids Club activities, July 4th fireworks, Christmas in July, Water Wars cardboard boat races, Halloween in August, hayrides, playground, beach, and game room. Many families return year after year for classic Maine summer traditions.

What kind of atmosphere should we expect?

Balsam Cove blends peaceful Maine lake life with classic campground fun. Most Saturday nights feature bonfires with music from 8–10 pm, and live bands play during major holiday weekends. If you prefer very quiet evenings, weekday stays are ideal — feel free to call us before booking to confirm event schedules.

Is this a “resort-style” campground?

No — and intentionally so. Balsam Cove is a traditional Maine lakeside campground focused on nature, family, and community rather than high-density resort crowds. If you love campfires, lake swims, hayrides, and a slower pace, you’ll feel right at home.

What types of camping do you offer?

  • Full-hookup RV sites (water, sewer, electric)
    • Pull-through sites accommodating RVs up to 45 feet
    • Tent sites with or without water/electric
    • Rustic rental cabins ideal for couples or small families

Does Balsam Cove offer full-hookup RV sites?

All RV sites include full hookups. Most offer 30-amp service, and select sites offer 50-amp. Online reservations just add 50 amp requirement to your search or let us know your needs when booking and we’ll help you choose the best site.

Are your RV sites big-rig friendly?

We have several pull-through sites that accommodate larger RVs up to 45 feet. Please call us if you have a large motorhome or fifth wheel so we can recommend the best site for you.

Are the RV sites level? Will I need blocks?

Many sites are naturally level, but as with most Maine campgrounds, leveling blocks are recommended just in case.

Do you offer seasonal RV sites in Maine?

Yes, we offer a limited number of seasonal sites each year. Seasonal campers enjoy a full summer on the lake with access to all amenities and events. Contact the office for availability and details.

What’s included in a cabin rental?

Cabins include a full-size bed, two bunks, refrigerator, microwave, table, chairs, ceiling fans, picnic table, grill, fire ring, and outdoor water at the site. Bathhouses are a short walk away. Linens are not provided.

Do cabins have bathrooms or air conditioning?

Cabins do not have private bathrooms or air conditioning. Guests use nearby bathhouses, and cabins include ceiling fans for comfort. Bring extra blankets for cooler Maine evenings.

How many people are allowed per site?

Cabins: Maximum 4 (2 adults + 2 children 16 & under included in fee)
RV Sites: Maximum 6 (2 adults + up to 4 children 16 & under included in fee)

Tent Sites: Maximum 6 (2 adults + up to 4 children 16 & under included in fee) maximum 2 adults without contacting office.

Full Hookup RV Sites: $45–$89

Do you allow one-night stays?

Most weekday and shoulder season dates allow one-night stays. High-season weekends typically require two nights, and holidays require three. Cabins,  waterfront and waterview sites vary.

Can I request a specific campsite?

Yes. You may request a specific site when booking online or by phone, but site numbers are not guaranteed and may be moved under certain circumstances. Add a $10 fee to lock in a specific site number.

What is your cancellation policy?

  • Within 3 days: No refund
    • 4–10 days: One night charge
    • 11+ days: 10% fee or full credit for a future reservation (within 18 months)
    • 90+ days: $5 flat fee

No refunds for weather, late arrivals, or early departures.

Stop at the office to receive your gate fob and campground map.

Is there a security gate?

Yes. Guests receive a gate fob at check-in for controlled access and added privacy.

🚣 Lake Life & Amenities

Does Balsam Cove have lake access?

Yes. We are located directly on Toddy Pond with a protected swim area, docks and boat ramp.

Is the lake sandy or rocky?

Our swim area is natural Maine lakefront and can be rocky. Water shoes are recommended. The swim area is separate from the boat ramp for safety.

Can I bring my own boat?

Yes. We offer a boat ramp for day use and slips starting at $20 per night. Please do not tie boats along the shoreline.

Are kayaks and boats included in my stay?

Boat rentals (kayaks, canoes, pontoon boat, fishing boat) are available for an additional fee. Advance reservations are recommended on busy weekends.

What amenities are available?

How strong is the Wi-Fi? Can I work remotely?

We provide free Wi-Fi throughout the campground, but signal strength may vary depending on location and usage. If you need reliable connectivity for work, please call us to discuss the best site locations. Cell phone hotspots work better in some instances.

Is there a lifeguard at the beach?

No. Swimming is at your own risk, and children must be supervised at all times.

Is Balsam Cove pet-friendly?

Yes. We love dogs! Well-behaved dogs are welcome.
Campsites: $3.50 per night
Cabins: $5 per night

Pets must be leashed, vaccinated, cleaned up after, and never left unattended. Dogs may swim at the boat ramp, not in the designated swim area.

Can we have visitors?

Yes. All visitors must check in at the office.
Day Visitors: $7 (higher on holidays)
Overnight Visitors: $12 plus tax.

Day visitors must depart by 9:30 pm.

Are golf carts allowed?

Privately owned golf carts are not permitted unless pre-approved for mobility needs. Please contact the office for details.

No. Fireworks, firearms, and weapons are not permitted.

What is the speed limit?

4 mph (walking speed).

Are there sewage or graywater restrictions?

All RV sites have sewer hookups. Do not discharge gray or black water onto the ground.

Can I decorate my site?

Yes — as long as decorations do not damage trees or campground facilities.

It does rain in Maine. Bring a raincoat for outside fun. There are also inside activities not far away: movie theaters nearby and in Bangor, along with a casino, museums and kids' activities (30 miles away).

Weather refunds are not offered, but optional Weather Sense coverage may be added during booking.

🚗 Drive 4 MPH — Walking Speed Only

We mean it. If staff asks you to slow down, please do so immediately. Safety comes first.

👨‍👩‍👧 We’re Family-Focused

Quiet hours are 10:00 PM – 7:30 AM on weekdays and 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM on Fri and Sat nights.
We are not a party campground. Respectful behavior and language are required.

👋 Visitors Welcome (With Registration)

All visitors must:

  • Park in Registration Parking
  • Check in at the office
